JANE Watters announced as Judge
Arts in the Valley is delighted to welcome highly noted art curator and judge, Jane
Watters, as one of the Judges for the $20,000 art prizes of Visual Arts in the Valley
2022. Jane Watters is the Director, Galleries of the National Trust of Australia (NSW)
and the SH Ervin Gallery, Gadigal land (Sydney), roles she has held since 2001.
The SH Ervin Gallery is one of the nation’s leading public art institutions, presenting the
work of Australian artists, past and present in engaging exhibitions. She is generally
credited with developing the excellent name of the galleries for presenting important
exhibitions and programs that span historical and contemporary Australian art and
recognise the contributions of Australian women and First Nations artists. She has
curated many important exhibitions, managed major touring exhibitions and has judged
many art prizes including the Portia Geach Memorial Award, NSW Parliament Plein Air
Painting Prize, Calleen Art Prize and Gallipoli Art Prize. Her formal education was in
visual arts, art administration and education, including being an alumnus of the Museum
Leadership Program and recipient of two Gordon Darling Travel Grants. She has
worked in the commercial gallery sector and served on the board of Regional & Public
Galleries Association of NSW. She is an advocate of contemporary, modern and
historical Australian artists and cultural heritage and supports the Uluru Statement.
