In 2017 Sculpture in the Valley held its sixth biennial sculpture exhibition, an integral part of the arts in the valley, music and art festival. As in the past, each exhibition is held at a new location and in 2017, we were very appreciative to Denise and John Wright who allowed their beautiful property Cedar Grove to be the site of the 2017 Sculpture in the Valley, exhibition. Their support and generosity was outstanding.

The wonderful and enthusiastic community of volunteers who helped organise Sculpture in the Valley have ensured that it has become a much anticipated event by the residents of Kangaroo Valley, Berry, the Shoalhaven area and beyond. It is the passion for delivering high quality art exhibitions to the public and the strong Kangaroo Valley community spirit, that convinced Colleen Fry to accept the position of Sculpture Director.

The 2017 exhibition attracted 180 entries entries from a diverse range of sculptors, including the well known and established to those who are emerging. Sculpture in the Valley supports the sculptor's right to artistic freedom and is inclusive of all modes of sculpture. As visitors walked around the outdoor exhibition they were able to take the time to discover what the sculptor is exploring while enjoying the experience and considering how it relates to the unique and beautiful landscape. The exhibits in the Whispers and Secrets galleries were sculptural works on a smaller scale, which established a more intimate relationship with the viewer.

The creativity evident across the diversity of sculptures, the theme, choice of materials, scale and method of execution created an experience for us that evoked feelings, laughter and thoughts from serious to the comic. Viewing the sculptures, was an enriching, thought-provoking, enjoyable and challenging experience.

We would like to thank the sculptors for sharing their works with us, the committee for the endless hours and expertise they generously gave, the Arts in the Valley committee for their support and to all the wonderful volunteers who helped throughout the exhibition.
