Gershwin in Kangaroo Valley
In May 2014 Arts in the Valley is presenting two concerts featuring the piano music of Gershwin.
On Saturday May 24 at 7pm, SIMON TEDESCHI will perform a program based on the music of Gershwin, including works by composers who influenced Gershwin’s writing. He will include the gorgeous Rhapsody in Blue. Simon has recently recorded two CDs of this music for the ABC, and both have been rapturously received. It will be a great thrill to hear him perform in Kangaroo Valley.
On Sunday May 25 at 2pm MIKE NOCK, arguably Australia’s greatest jazz pianist, will play a program including the music of Gershwin. Mike was recently awarded the prestigious Australia Council Don Banks Award, and is one of Australia’s most sought-after musicians. It will be a rare thrill to hear him play solo, as he usually plays in small ensembles.
This will be a fascinating weekend of music, giving you a chance to hear this iconic piano music, from both a classical and a jazz perspective. Gershwin himself straddled these two musical genres, in music ranging from Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris to the opera Porgy and Bess. Many of his tunes have become jazz standards performed by jazz musicians all over the world.
This wonderful pair of concerts is made possible by the support of Theme and Variations, who are kindly lending us a concert Steinway for the occasion. The concerts will take place in the Kangaroo Valley Community Hall.
