The first featured the Sydney Piano Trio - Ron Thomas , Susan Blake and Gerard Willems.
A second concert with David Pereira and Larry Sitsky who played the compelete works of Anton Rubinstein for cello and piano.

Arts in the Valley 2007

The inaugural Kangaroo Valley Arts Festival, Arts in the Valley, was held 20-22 April 2007 and featured classical and fine contemporary music integrated with the visual arts in events and collaborations never before witnessed at an Australian arts festival.

Friday 20 April

8:00pm Concert 1: Piano duet - Geoffrey Tozer and Ian Munro

Two of Australia’s most accomplished pianists, Geoffrey Tozer and Ian Munro, team up to form a piano duo to play some of the celebrated works in the piano four-hand literature. This will be their inaugural performance together.

The centrepiece of the program will be the Schubert Fantasy in F Minor. They will also play works by Mozart, Fauré and Satie, and a new work composed especially for the concert by Ian Munro.

Saturday 21 April

2:30pm Concert A1: Brett Dean and Heather Betts

Brett Dean, for years violist with the Berlin Philharmonic, plays some of his own works for solo viola, while painter Heather Betts creates a new painting on stage!

2:30pm Concert A2: Rachel Scott and Micky Allan

Due to ongoing illness, David Pereira has had to withdraw from performing at the festival. We wish him well in his recovery. We are thrilled to welcome Rachel Scott in his stead. Rachel is well-known to valley audiences through her wonderful performances at Yarrawa Estate.

She studied with David and is currently forging a very special career for herself. She has taken to the novel ideas in the Music and Art Series with gusto, and is enjoying working with Micky Allan. David Pereira will be in attendance and has written a new piece for Rachel to perform in her collaboration with Micky.

7:30pm Concert 3: Yvonne Kenny and Andrea Katz

Hear Australia’s favourite soprano, Yvonne Kenny in recital, accompanied by Andrea Katz. For this wonderful event we have commissioned our renowned local composers, Martin Wesley-Smith and Andrew Ford to each compose a song for Ms Kenny. The program will also include works by Schubert and Liszt.

7:30pm Concert 4: Guitar Trek

One of Australia’s most popular guitar quartets, Guitar Trek is unique because it uses all the instruments in the guitar family (from bass to soprano) and performs an unusual repertoire, much written especially for this ensemble.

Led by one of Australia’s most respected guitarists, Timothy Kain, this group has been wowing audiences with their virtuosity. Their program will include works by Holst, Piazzolla and De Falla, and will feature two brilliant Australian works: Six Fish by Nigel Westlake and Songs and Marches by local composer Martin Wesley-Smith.

Sunday 22 April

11:00am Concert B1: Robert Irving and John O'Donnell

This is the most significant heritage home in Kangaroo Valley, built in 1881 and never before open to the public. Robert Irving, eminent architectural historian, will talk about the house and its significance and design, and John O’Donnell, one of Australia’s most accomplished harpsichordists, will play a recital.

11:00am Concert B2: Ian McKay and The Four Basses

Ian McKay, architect, will introduce the home he designed and The Four Basses will give their premiere performance. All players are Sydney professionals, led by Sydney Symphony Principal Bassist, Kees Boersma. The concert will include the world premiere public performance of Elena Kats-Chernin’s Charleston Noir.

11:00am Concert B3: Nick Turner and Barbara Jane Gilby

Nick Turner, architect, will talk about his design concepts and Barbara Jane Gilby will perform a solo violin recital. Barbara led the Tasmanian Symphony for many years, and featured in their best-selling recording of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons. She will play works by Bach (including the great Chaconne), Vieuxtemps and Kreisler, and Like Icarus Ascending by local composer, Andrew Ford.

11:00am Concert B4: Edward Szewczyk and Claire Edwardes

Architect Edward Szewczyk will talk about this house and its relationship to the land, and percussionist Claire Edwardes will perform. Claire is one of Australia’s most exciting young percussionists, with a burgeoning career in Australia and overseas. She is thrilling to watch in performance. She will play More Marimba Dances by Australia’s Ross Edwards, an intriguing work for flower pots and voice by the American Frederic Rzewski, and a Bach Chorale.

11:00am Concert B5: Peter Stutchbury, Geoff Collins and Alice Giles

Architect, Peter Stutchbury will introduce his award-winning house while Geoff Collins, flute will play a duo recital with Alice Giles, harp.

A rare chance to hear the brilliant Brett Dean playing in recital with one of Australia’s most sought-after pianists, Ian Munro. The program will include a Brahms sonata, works by Dean, himself a wonderful composer, and ensemble works including other festival musicians, such as the magnificent Debussy Trio, where Dean will be joined by Alice Giles (harp), and Geoffrey Collins (flute).

2:30pm Concert 6: Match Percussion Duo ~ Elegy in a Country Graveyard

Match Percussion’s Daryl Pratt and Alison Eddington will perform Water Settings written by Pratt about the local water bodies, including Jervis Bay and Seven Mile Beach. Pratt’s work documents his response to the region, especially during his time as Artist-in-Residence at the Bundanon Estate. Match will also play the gentle Djilile by Peter Sculthorpe and Cross Hatch by the Japanese composer Toru Takemitsu.

The second half of this concert will feature the world premiere of Andrew Ford’s Elegy in a Country Graveyard which takes the Robertson cemetery as its focal point. The cemetery is as old as Robertson itself, and Ford’s Elegy evokes its past and present through the memories of local people. Their voices, together with environmental sounds, are woven into a rich tapestry of sound with local choirs and the Southern Highlands Concert Band. The production of the tape part of this work is a co-production with the ABC’s Listening Room.

Elegy in a Country Graveyard is a musical work unique to the area. This will be its world premiere performance. This concert is supported by Shoalhaven Arts Board.
