McLeod, Cecil

didgeridoo

Cecil McLeod was raised in Kempsey NSW. He is from the Monaro/Falls creek tribe, and speaks Yattmetang. As a teenager he went to live with his family in Cairns, as he wanted to develop his interests in dance, music and culture. His uncles Michael Webster and Andrew Campbell run the Tjapukai Dance Company in Cairns. Cecil is self-taught on the didgeridoo.

His uncle Bobby McLeod started the Doonooch Dancers in Nowra, and Cecil moved to the area in 1992 to join this group. Since then he has performed and travelled with this Australian troupe as Song Man, dancer and didgeridoo player throughout Australia and in 28 other countries. Doonooch Dancers have represented Australia at many festivals, especially on the Pacific fringe, performed for the Pope’s recent visit to Sydney and helped open the new Shoalhaven Cultural Centre in Nowra.
